I’ve always really admired people who were able to successfully give up things that they love for Lent. And I mean like real things – wine, sweets, social media, tv – things that matter. And then you have people like me- people who think life is short, the world is a sad place, so why would I give up the few things that bring me joy and happiness?
Kidding, kidding (kind of). I truly love the original purpose of Lent- to begin preparing yourself for the resurrection of our Lord. But I think society has turned something that is supposed to be spiritually refining into an opportunity for a crash diet or a humble brag. So honestly, I’ve just never felt strongly convicted to make the sacrifice because I know I’d be doing it for the latter reason.
But this year has been one of such growth and maturity for me spiritually, that I finally think I’m ready to practice Lent 2017. I’m ready to give up something that consumes my thoughts on a pretty much daily basis.
Ya’ll, this is for real. I think giving up wine would be easier for me than giving up candy. This is how seriously I’m taking Lent this year. Every time I find myself salivating at the mouth thinking about that box of Hot Tamales, I’m going to commit to praying. I’m really taking Psalm 34:8 to heart (“Taste and see that the Lord is good.”). And I think that the best way to help keep candy off my mind is some retail therapy. I mean, Spring Break is right around the corner…
